12. Cutest dog Competition                               

 Does this look like a million dollar face to you? Tuffy, a three year old Maltese Pomeranian mix from Tempe is a finalist in the All American Pet Bran’s Cutest Dog Competition and could win the grand prize. a million dollars. Actually, when I bought Tuffy, I was thinking he just cleaned out my bank account, so right now it’s actually paying me back.

Ashley Olsen bought the dog as a puppy as a surprise for her boyfriend, Tim, and was on Facebook when she found out about the competition. I was thinking to myself, “My dog’s cute. My dog’s cuter than these dogs, so I’ll just put him on there.” And by the end of the week, he ended up being the winner of that week.

Tuffy won week three, and $500. A total of 12 finalists will be chosen, and then, on Thanksgiving Day, one of them will win the title, The Cutest Dog. Ashley says if she wins, she’ll donate the money to the foundation Believe in Miracles, started by a close friend of hers who passed away from cancer. What it does is, it’s for high school and college students that get cancer, and it pays for extra expenses… so things that most people don’t think about. Alexis Vance, Fox 10 News.

finalist [fáinəlist] : a person who takes part in the final of a game or competition

ex) She was the oldest finalist in her event at the 2004 Games, at  age 31.

competition [kɑ̀mpətíʃən] : an event in which people compete with each other to find out who is the best at sth

ex) The competition begins on November 1st, but you can sign up any time before the end of the contest.

account [əkáunt] : an arrangement that sb has with a bank, etc. to keep money there, take some out, etc.

ex) I don’t have a bank account.

donate [dóuneit] : to give money, food, clothes, etc. to sb/sth, especially a charity

ex) He donated thousands of pounds to charity. 

foundation [faundéiʃən] : an organization that is established to provide money for a particular purpose, for example for scientific research or charity

ex) The money will go to the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. 

extra [ékstrə] : more than is usual, expected, or than exists already

ex) Breakfast is provided at no extra charge. 

 

12.2 Expressions                      

When I bought Tuffy, I was thinking he just cleaned out my bank account, so right now it’s actually paying me back.

Tuffy is a finalist Cutest Dog Competition. Before he became a finalist, she used to think she's gonna spand all of money in her bank account to raise him. But now, he's gonna compete with 12 finalist will be chosen on Thanksgiving Day. And Ashley really believes he'll get the title The Cutest Dog In America and he'll definitely repay her.

She plans to donate the prize money to the foundation Believe in Miracles, if she win a grand prize. That money is also offered to help for college students that get cancer.

Maltese

The Maltese is a small breed of dog in the toy group, known for its silky white hair, though many owners of pet Maltese give them a short "puppy cut" for ease of grooming. The Maltese breed is descended from dogs originating in the Central Mediterranean Area. The website's name stems from the colloquial name of books given at the start of the academic year by university administrations with the intention of helping students to get to know each other better.
