5. Tiger, Role Model ?

Back in 1993, NBA star Charles Barkley set off a firestorm by insisting in a Nike TV ad that he was not a role model. Critics blasted him for supposedly shirking his responsibility to the kids who idolized him and bought his sneakers. 16 years later, the debate over athletes as role models is back on the front burner thanks to another Nike spokesman, Tiger Woods. Once thought to be the ultimate role model, it turns out hes anything but at least if the tabloid reports are true. Now, this may sound crazy, but there may be a way for Tiger to turn it around. He's announced an indefinite hiatus from golf to focus on his wife and family. Nobody's perfect, but if he can show he's truly sorry explain why he did this and that he can become a better person in the wake of this scandal. Perhaps he'll resume the role of someone we can continue to admire. That's a page from my notebook. I'm Katie Couric, CBS News.

5.3 Translation

5.4 Sum up

Some sports stars seem not to manage their private life after they got fame and wealth. In 2009, Tiger Woods called the best role model once has lost the peoples faith due to the scandal. So he decided to cease the golf unlimitedly and focus on his family. He could be the more mature person through this experience.

NBA

The National Basketball Association (NBA) is a professional men's basketball league, composed of thirty teams in North America (twenty-nine in the United States and one in Canada). It is an active member of USA Basketball (USAB), which is recognized by the International Basketball Federation as the National Governing Body (NGB) for basketball in the United States. The NBA is one of the four major North American professional sports leagues, which include Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Football League (NFL), and the National Hockey League (NHL). The league was founded in New York City on June 6, 1946 as the Basketball Association of America (BAA). The league adopted the name National Basketball Association in 1949 after merging with the rival National Basketball League (NBL). The league's several international as well as individual team offices are directed out of its head offices located in the Olympic Tower at 645 Fifth Avenue in New York City. NBA Entertainment and NBA TV studios are directed out of offices located in Secaucus, New Jersey.

Tabloid

Tabloid is an industry term for a smaller newspaper format per spread; to a weekly or semi-weekly alternative newspaper that focuses on local-interest stories and entertainment, often distributed free of charge (often in a smaller, tabloid-sized newspaper format); or to a newspaper that tends to sensationalize and emphasize or exaggerate sensational crime stories, gossip columns repeating scandalous and innuendos about the deeply personal lives of celebrities and sports stars, and other so-called "junk food news" or junk mail (often in a smaller, tabloid-sized newspaper format). As the term "tabloid" has become synonymous with down-market newspapers in some areas, some small-format papers which claim a higher standard of journalism refer to themselves as "compact" newspapers instead.
